Content Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction

Unclear on today's lecture? Need help understanding your assignment? Preparing for an exam?

Content tutors are here to help.

The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides tutors for many lower-level courses throughout the curriculum. Tutors work one-on-one or with small groups depending on the subject to help students understand course content, complete assignments and prepare for tests and exams. Most tutors are experienced students who successfully completed the course with a 3.0 or higher, meaning they bring knowledge about the subject and the YCP course to their sessions with students.

Tutors for many introductory science, business, and humanities classes are available on a drop-in basis–no appointment is required. You can view the tutor schedule for the current semester by visiting the Drop-In Tutor schedule. Tutors for math, nursing and psychology are available by making an appointment through Spartan Success Network.

The ASC also provides exam review sessions for select math classes connected with a math mentor and supplemental instruction sessions for select introductory biology and chemistry courses. See the ASC News page for upcoming sessions and workshops being hosted at the ASC.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much does tutoring cost?

Nothing! Tutoring is included as part of your tuition.

  • How often can I receive tutoring?

There are no restrictions on drop-in tutoring. Come as often as you need! For math tutoring which is by appointment, students are restricted to two hours per day with math tutors.

  • Where do I go for tutoring?

While most tutoring occurs in the Academic Success Center, located in Humanities Room 1 in the lower-level of the Humanities building, some tutors are available in alternate locations based on particular disciplines. For example, nursing tutoring often takes place in Diehl Hall and Engineering and Computer Science tutoring often takes place in the Kinsley Engineering Center.

Some tutors are also available to meet via Zoom. See the location listed next to your tutor on the tutor schedule for their specific locations.

  • Do I have to make an appointment?

Most tutoring is drop-in, so you just need to come to the Academic Success Center or alternative tutoring location during a tutor’s stated hours. Check the Drop-In Tutor Schedule for announcements of any changes to tutors’ availability. Math, nursing and psychology tutoring does occur by appointment. Visit Spartan Success Network to make an appointment.

  • What should I bring to a tutoring session?

Bring any materials you have related to the class and/or specific assignment you are working on, including textbook, notes, and materials provided by the professor.

  • I’m not available during the hours listed on the schedule for the tutor(s) for my class OR I don’t see a tutor listed for my course. Am I able to still receive help?

If you are not available during the current tutoring times available for your course or don’t see a tutor listed for your course, reach out to asc@ycp.edu and the Academic Success staff will work with you to try to coordinate an alternative solution so you can get you the help you need.
