York College of PA Biology Students Present Research at National Diversity in STEM Conference

November 17, 2022

Four York College of Pennsylvania Biology majors presented research they had conducted alongside faculty mentors at the National Diversity in STEM Conference in Puerto Rico.

Sophomores Opeoluwa “Daniel” Adesola (Philadelphia), Taylor Rossiter (Bridgeton, N.J.), and Graham Collaborative Innovation Fellow Jacob Wingard (York) presented posters on research they conducted with Associate Professor of Biology Meda Higa, Ph.D., that began as part of the Small World Initiative (SWI), an innovative program that encourages students to pursue careers in science while addressing a worldwide health threat – superbugs and the diminishing supply of effective antibiotics. The three started working on SWI as first-year students and have continued their research with Higa.

Senior Aaliyah Pabon (Russell, PA) presented a poster titled “Understanding Microplastic Abundance Across Trophic Levels in Freshwater Streams in South Central Pennsylvania.” She worked on her research with Associate Professors of Biology Bridgette Hagerty, Ph.D., Jessica Nolan, Ph.D., and Karl Kleiner, Ph.D.
