York College of Pennsylvania and WellSpan Research are collaborating to offer an eight-week Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program (SURIP) for undergraduate students enrolled in a pre-health or health-related programs.

Research Interns will work with WellSpan investigators and trained clinical research staff to support clinical research/clinical trials in progress. They will gain an understanding of the responsible conduct of clinical research and assist with processes related to conducting clinical research. Based on current WellSpan research needs, Research Interns may be assigned to a specific research team for the duration of the program or work with several teams.

In addition, Research Interns may have the opportunity to present their experience at the Annual Drexel Discovery Day in Philadelphia in October of the following year and the WellSpan Discover Day in May.

Applicants must be undergraduate students at York College enrolled in a pre-health, health or related degree program and aspiring to attend a graduate program in a medical or other related field. The ideal applicant will complete the junior academic year prior to June. Students must be in good standing with a science GPA of 3.0.

Two qualified applicants will be selected to participate in the program as Research Interns. The selection will be made by the Advisory Committee, comprised of York College faculty and WellSpan representatives, and will be based on the student’s academic record, reference letter from their Academic Advisor, and an evaluation of the student’s motivation to join the program as expressed in the required personal statement.

The deadline for applying is March 1. Interns are selected and notified in April and begin their internship with orientation in June. They will work eight-hour shifts, Monday through Friday, and will receive a stipend of $4,000 for their work.

Nursing students who are interested in applying should contact Stacy Lutter, chair of the Stabler Nursing Department, at slutter@ycp.edu; students in other majors should contact Wendy Boehmler, chair of the Biology Department, at wboehmle@ycp.edu
