National Scholarships
There are many scholarships and grants for studying abroad, including the opportunities listed below. Each scholarship has unique application requirements and deadlines.
Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
Sponsored by the US State Department, the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship offers study abroad scholarships to students who are Pell Grant recipients. The scholarships are merit-based and competitive.
Fund for Education Abroad
The Fund for Education Abroad offers a single online application for multiple opportunities, some of which have specific eligibility requirements.
Diversity Abroad Network Scholarship
The Diversity Abroad Network Scholarship program is sponsored by an organization called BeGlobali and requires you to set up a free account.
Education New Zealand
Education New Zealand is an organization that awards scholarships to students studying in New Zealand.
IIE Generation Study Abroad Travel Grants
The Institute of International Education offers multiple study abroad scholarships and travel grants, some of which have specific eligibility requirements.
Study Abroad in Scandinavia
Study Abroad in Scandinavia awards scholarships to students studying in Stockholm, Sweden, or Copenhagen, Denmark.
Tortuga Backpacks Study Abroad Scholarships
The Tortuga Study Abroad Scholarship awards $1,000 plus a travel backpack—yes, really.
Study Abroad Organization Scholarships
Many of the study abroad providers with which YCP partners offer scholarships and flight vouchers for students participating in their programs. The award amounts vary with the duration of the program. Please note that you must apply separately for the scholarships through the provider. Each program has its own application process and deadlines.
AIFS Scholarships
AIFS Scholarships offers a number of scholarship programs and claims that over 50% of their students receive some kind of financial aid.
API Scholarships
API is a large study abroad organization that claims to award millions of dollars in scholarships every year. They have a wide range of scholarship options.
CEA CAPA Scholarships
CEA CAPA awards $2 million in study abroad scholarship funds annually. The scholarships are competitive, somewhat less so for the fall semester than the spring semester. They prohibit the use of AI for scholarship applications.
CIEE Scholarships
CIEE study abroad scholarships are based on both financial need and merit. Summer scholarships are part of the mix.
IES Scholarships
IES states that their scholarship application takes 10 minutes to complete and that they will provide an answer within five business days. IES is a non-profit.
SAI Scholarships
SAI manages 15 different scholarship programs for study abroad students. Some of them may be used for international internships or volunteer opportunities.
WorldStrides Scholarships
WorldStrides awarded $1.8 million in study abroad scholarship funding in 2024. They have five different scholarship programs.
