Marketview Arts Exhibitions

This exhibition broadly addresses entitlements not equally available and how this affects communities. Featuring Collective Rogue Arts members Reagan Bitler, Ophelia Chambliss, Jeannine Dabb, Kristin Kest, Nicole Osborne, Andrew Smith, and Debbie Toluba, the exhibition includes individual and collaborative works in a variety of media.

First Generation to College Celebration Day Reception: Wednesday, November 8, 5–7 p.m.

Stories is an art exhibit featuring photographs by first-generation and first-year students at York College. It is presented in collaboration with the Cultural Alliance of York County and photographer Carla B. Long. First-Year Seminar class But First, Happiness collaborated with local photographer Carla B. Long to share their unique first-generation story in a picture. The students were asked to make a photograph about their journey to college. Over the semester, they learned about the creative process, focusing on how to create an image that tells their story.

Being the first person from their family to attend college meant they had to pave their way, learn from their mistakes, ask questions, and keep working hard to achieve their goals. Each first-year student has a story to tell. York College is honored to have these dedicated and resilient students as part of our college family. We hope you enjoy the show.

Creative York has partnered with Marketview Arts to exhibit the Gold Star Garden Plein Air from November 14–December 30 in the Artists Underground gallery. The Gold Star Plein Air event was held in October at the Veterans Memorial Gold Star Healing and Peace Garden.

“As I See It: A Retrospective” opens on November 24—Black Friday—for a reason: the artist’s 80th birthday. The exhibition is curated by Interim Gallery Director, Ivy Rodgers.

“As I See It” will be Stephen March’s 30th solo exhibition over the course of his career, which began in 1966, when he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.A. in Fine Art. March went on to receive his M.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design in 1968. In a career spanning more than four decades, he has created an immense body of work that touches on topics ranging from news media and surveillance to the fragility of human existence.

The Elegies series has had the longest lifespan- it is a body of work of mixed media paintings covering conflicts March has witnessed throughout his life: the racial and civil rights upheaval of the 1960’s, the Vietnam War, and most recently, the conflict in Ukraine. In talking about the intent of his work, March states, “I have been, and continue to be, interested in creating visual art that can transcend the physicality of the material surface and be a vehicle for emotional, spiritual, and intellectual contemplation, as well as a metaphor for human existence, especially within my own time.”

Stephen March has worked professionally as an artist, residential designer/carpenter, and teacher; most recently at York Country Day School as a Middle and Upper School Art Instructor until his retirement in 2016. He has also taught at a collegiate level at York College of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University York Campus, and Elmira College in Elmira, New York. His art is in the collections of The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Chattahoochee Valley Art Museum, Masur Museum of Art, Elmira College, York Hospital/Apple Hill Center, and numerous private collections in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Texas. March lives and works in Spring Grove.

The annual York Community Art Scholars Exhibition (YCASE) Art Walk showcases artwork by students from participating high schools within 5 to 10 miles of downtown York.

The YCASE Finalist Exhibition features artworks from each participating school that are considered exceptional by jurors, and a select number of these pieces are chosen by a guest juror to receive awards.

The senior exhibition is a culminating exhibit from the Visual Arts Diploma Programme of York Academy Regional Charter School's graduating class of 2024, featuring independent works from seven artists exploring a wide range of media, concepts, and methods of personal expression. York Academy is an International Baccalaureate school with an unrelenting focus on academic excellence, challenging students in diverse learning environments and opening doors for growth, opportunity, and global citizenship.

Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. is a letterpress printer, papermaker, and book artist best known for social and political commentary. Kennedy creates printed items from handset wood and metal type, oil-based inks, and eco-friendly affordable paper and chipboard at his studio, Kennedy Prints!, in Detroit.

The Appell Arts Fellowship and Powder Mill Foundation Arts Fellowship are residency programs awarded to recent graduates of YCP’s art program. The Fellowships promote community engagement and the continued artistic growth of the Fellows. This exhibition celebrates the collective work of 2023-24 Fellows, Brittany Dao and Jordan Fosheé.
