Students in the Appell Environmental Horticulture Program at York College of Pennsylvania are bringing their coursework to life with a community Plant Sale today, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the Appell Horticulture Center parking lot on York College’s campus.

What sets this sale apart is who’s behind it: students. From selecting and growing the plants to marketing the event and preparing for customers, they’ve driven every step. The result is a wide-ranging selection of perennials, pollinator plants, annuals, succulents, and a variety of vegetables and herbs, now available to buy.

The sale began in 2023 as an idea from Assistant Professor of Environmental Horticulture Dr. Jason Smith. Today, it has grown into a dynamic, real-world learning opportunity. Throughout the semester, multiple horticulture classes have collaborated to nurture the plants, track their progress, and organize the event. Students have also developed promotional materials to engage both campus and community audiences.

Proceeds from the sale support future student projects, ensuring the experience continues to grow year after year.
