York College Statement on Spectators at Athletics Events

April 6, 2021

At their recent meeting, the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) presidents decided that member institutions would have autonomy in determining policies concerning attendance of spectators at athletic competitions. In consultation with Assistant Dean of Student Affairs and Athletic Director Paul Saikia and members of our COVID-19 crisis management team, I made the decision to continue our current “no spectator” policy (see below). As an extension of this, I also discourage York College’s students from traveling to athletic events held elsewhere.

I understand that our Spartan fans – JL and I included – are disappointed, but I remind everyone that we are still in the midst of a pandemic with many communities currently experiencing upticks in the number of COVID cases. Some colleges and universities have recently increased on-campus restrictions in response to a rising number of COVID cases among students. My decision reflects a concern for the continued safety of our campus community, our ongoing campus visitor policy, and a sense of fairness to all student groups.

Our athletic communications staff are livestreaming as many events as possible on ycpspartans.com. You will see on that site that our Spartans are doing very well during their first year in the MAC. I hope that you will continue to cheer them on personally or remotely through Facebook and Twitter. Thank you for your cooperation.

Sincerely,

Pamela Gunter-Smith, Ph.D.

York College Statement on Spectators at Athletics Events

In keeping with our campuswide policies prohibiting campus visitors and gatherings, York College will not permit spectators at home athletics events throughout the remainder of the spring season. While we understand that this may be disappointing, our greatest concern remains the safety of our community and the continued health and success of our teams. We ask for your cooperation during this challenging time and thank you for your support. We remain committed to streaming as many of our live events as possible.
