As part of its Campus Sustainability Awareness Campaign, York College of Pennsylvania will host a free, public talk by Frostburg State University professor Richard Russo from 7 to 8 p.m., April 20, in Weinstock Lecture Hall, Willman Business Center. The talk, “The Words That Sustain Us – GeoHumanities and Sustainability,” is also available virtually through Zoom.

Russo is chair of Frostburg’s Department of Geography. He earned degrees in geography from the University of Mary Washington, Syracuse University, and the University of Maryland. His presentation will explore the connections between ecological sustainability and the protection of linguistic diversity, the maintenance and transmission of lexical precision, and the telling of “grounded stories.” Specific examples from southeastern and south-central Pennsylvania will inform this geographic discussion of human-environment interactions.

The Campus Sustainability Awareness Campaign, directed at members of the York College campus community, has been planned by the President’s Task Force for Campus Sustainability at York College. Twenty events are planned from April 18 through 29. Offerings including bee hotel installations, wild flower “bombs,” student research presentations, community gardening, local clean-up efforts, Earth Day BINGO, and herb garden planting.
