MacVean grew up fully bilingual with Spanish and English in Guatemala and has dedicated many years as a faculty member and researcher in that country, focusing on the agroecology and entomology of coffee, snow peas, and other horticultural crops in Central America.

MacVean is the author of more than 20 journal articles, book chapters, and papers and has organized numerous student exchanges between the United States and Central America. He has received a large number of grants, including a RACP Grant of $7 million from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the construction of the Science Center at St. Francis University.
