York College Alumnus Carries Out Dream Through Fund at York County Community Foundation

Mont and Cheryl Shaull are providing academic opportunities to students in York City after their lifetimes through the creation of the Mont Z. Shaull Scholarship Fund at York County Community Foundation (YCCF).
A graduate of William Penn High School in the City of York, Mont was a gifted basketball player and musician, but was not the best student academically. He felt very fortunate that his family could send him to college and wanted to give back to those young people who might be deserving but don't have the means or the family support to get them to and through college. As an alumnus of York College of Pennsylvania (YCP), Mont wanted other students to have an opportunity to attend YCP.
Advised by friend and attorney, Andy Kagen, Mont and Cheryl chose YCCF to steward their legacy.
“Mont and Cheryl felt confident that the Community Foundation would ensure that their wishes would forever be carried out,” according to Jane Conover, YCCF President and CEO. “After Mont’s death, we introduced Cheryl to the York College Community Opportunity Scholarship Program as a way to carry out his dream. We are honored to help carry on their legacy.”
The YCCF Mont Z. Shaull Scholarship Fund will provide an annual grant to YCCOSP. Students from William Penn High School participate in YCCOSP for their four years of high school. The program provides them with the tools necessary to prepare themselves for four years at York College. The students selected will be identified as Shaull Scholars. Upon successful completion of high school and the YCCOSP program at William Penn, and acceptance into York College, full tuition, room and board at York College will be provided free of charge for four years to the YCCOSP students. With their York College bachelor’s degree, Shaull Scholars will be ready to contribute to society in a prosperous way and carry on Mont and Cheryl’s dreams for generations to come.
"Through the generosity of the Shaulls, deserving students selected as Shaull Scholars will be given the opportunity to access the high-quality education that York College provides,” said York College President Dr. Pamela Gunter-Smith. “Their success will be directly impacted by Mont and Cheryl Shaull’s desire to help others.”
