Men's and Women's Lacrosse teams earn NCAA Tournament bids

May 07, 2018
The York College lacross programs have completed a highly successful regular season.

Men's Lacrosse

For the fourth time in school history and for the third straight year, the York College men's lacrosse team will be playing in the NCAA Tournament as the field was announced on Sunday evening. The Spartans will host Western New England College on Wednesday, May 9 at Kinsley Field in a second-round contest.

The Spartans have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 with all four years featuring at least one home game for the Green and White. The Spartans earned their way into the tournament with a record of 17-2 after winning the Capital Athletic Conference regular-season championship with a mark of 8-0.

The Spartans are very familiar with a number of teams in the tournament as they played nine games against 2018 NCAA Tournament participants. York is 7-2 in games against tournament teams this season.

The Spartans were moved to the traditionally northern bracket as they have faced just one of the 17 other teams on their half of the bracket. The lone game came against Stevenson in the second game of the Mustang Classic, a game the Spartans won 20-7. They would not be able to meet Stevenson until the Final Four as the Mustangs are on the lower portion of the bracket, opposite the Green and White.

The winner of Wednesday's game will face the winner of Amherst and Keene State in Amherst. The location of the third round game will be determined by Wednesday's results.

Spartan head coach Brandon Childs likes the draw for his squad.

"I really like that we are among so many teams that we have never faced before," said Childs. "We have faced so many tough NCAA Tournament teams this year, it's nice to get to see some teams that haven't seen us and teams we haven't seen. I think it's exciting and we are ready to get back to work and prepare for Wednesday."

Women's Lacrosse

The York College women's lacrosse team earned their seventh straight NCAA Tournament berth as the Spartans earned an at-large bid as the field was announced on Sunday night. York was one of three Capital Athletic Conference teams to earn a tournament berth.

York will host a first weekend set of games. On Saturday, Cabrini and Washington & Lee will square off at Kinsley Field. The winner of that game will then face the Spartans in the second round game on Sunday in York.

The Spartans finished second in the CAC regular season with an overall record of 13-4 and 7-1 in the CAC. All seven of York's NCAA Tournament appearances have been at-large bids.

The Spartans played seven teams that are in the field during their 2018 season. York went 4-4 in their eight games against the seven tournament teams.

The winner of the York pod advances to face the winner of the Rowan pod. The Profs host the winner of the Catholic and Johnson & Wales first-round game in Glassboro on Sunday.

York owns an all-time NCAA tournament record of 6-6 with two trips to the Elite Eight (2015 and 2017). York is 4-0 at Kinsley Field in the NCAA Tournament.

Spartan head coach Jen Muston is happy to see her squad rewarded with an at-large berth.

"The team feels energized and excited about this NCAA bid and getting another chance to compete with one another," said Muston. "We have a sense of unfinished business for this season so we appreciate the opportunity to get a second chance at something great. We want to take full advantage of that opportunity. This berth is for our seniors."
