York College of Pennsylvania students met recently with U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos as part of the College’s #SpartaNation tour. The visit to Washington, D.C., was organized by the Department of Alumni Relations as part of the East Coast tour dubbed #SpartaNation, which included stops in New York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Baltimore. Students were exposed to the historical, cultural, industrial, and civic attractions of each city, while engaging with York College alumni and friends along the way.

“The SpartaNation tour aims to place our student ambassadors with our alumni and friends who are doing things at a very high level and on a national scale,” said York College President Dr. Pamela Gunter-Smith. “We appreciate the officials from the Department of Education taking time to talk to our students about the importance of education in America, and conversely, for them to hear from our students about what matters to them.”

The visit to the Department of Education and introduction to Secretary DeVos was coordinated by 2001 graduate Brandon Sherman, senior counsel to the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Civil Rights. The students were also offered a policy briefing from Frank Brogan, former Chairman and CEO of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, who recently was nominated to become Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education.

“I was absolutely grateful for the opportunity to visit the US Department of Education,” said Zachary Snier, a junior biology major from New Park. “Speaking directly with the individuals crafting national education policy was an honor, and also demonstrated how our federal government is not as distant from the citizens as I once believed. Hearing how the Department works and how a York College alumnus has become successful with the department was eye-opening to the opportunities that exist for us beyond graduation.”
