York College Department of Campus Safety among three at PA colleges to earn IACLEA accreditation
York College’s Department of Campus Safety was recently awarded accreditation from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA). York College becomes only the third college or university in Pennsylvania and the 51st in the country to be awarded this accreditation.
Accreditation demonstrates that the Department adheres to “the highest professional practices in campus public safety management, administration, operations, and support services” according to David Bousquet, IACLEA Accreditation Commission president.
The process toward this notable achievement began more than three years ago, and included a recent three-day site visit by a team of trained assessors from around the country who reviewed all the department’s policies and proofs of compliance, conducted observations of operations, went on ride-alongs with officers and interviewed campus and community members. The Department of Campus Safety had to comply with 215 standards covering such topics as Clery Act and Title IX compliance, recruitment, training, patrol operations, use of force, investigative services, communications and crime prevention.
“We all believed that working toward this goal would make us a better and more professional department,” said Director of Campus Safety Ed Bruder. “Perhaps even more importantly, accreditation would demonstrate to our campus community that we do the right thing, in the right way, when they need our services.”
The accreditation period is for four years, during which time the Department of Campus Safety must continue to submit annual reports attesting to ongoing compliance with the accreditation standards. The Department will be formally recognized in June 2018 at the IACLEA international conference in Orlando, Fla.
The IACLEA accreditation commission is a 12-member panel that is representative of two- and four-year institutions, public and private colleges and six geographic regions within the United States. IACLEA represents campus public safety leaders at more than 1,200 institutions of higher education and offers IACLEA Accreditation to colleges and university law enforcement, security, and public safety departments.
The Department of Campus Safety includes sworn campus law enforcement officers, professional and student security officers, dispatchers, office support staff, and transportation drivers. The Department works closely with students, faculty, staff and community members to create partnerships that keep the campus a safe place to live and learn.
