York College Center for Community Engagement to host Human Library on March 30

March 05, 2019
The Human Library

York College’s Center for Community Engagement (CCE) will host its third session of Human Library – an event featuring a library collection of humans from the central Pennsylvania community sharing their stories with others through open, honest conversations – from 1 to 5 p.m. on March 30 at the CCE, 59 East Market Street, York. The event is open to the public free of charge; registration is required on Eventbrite

A Human Library is a library of human beings, individuals, that each represent a group in the community that are somehow exposed to stigma, prejudice, and/or discrimination. It aims to establish a safe conversational space where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.

Participants are invited to become readers by taking a person out on loan for a conversation on the topic/issue that they represent. Conversations are offered to a duration of approximately 30 minutes. This is not a storytelling session, but rather an experience sharing with built-in Q & A. The outcome of the session and direction of the talk is dependent on what the reader(s) ask about. It is the privilege of both parties that they can end the conversation at any point they may wish.
