Undefeated Men's Basketball Team Carries Momentum into the Second Half of the Season
The 2017 portion of the York College men’s basketball schedule has been very memorable. The Spartans finished out 2017 11-0 and ranked in the top 25 for the first time since the end of the 2006 season.
The first half of the campaign has featured a pair of in-season tournament championships, a trio of wins over top 25 teams including a thrilling overtime win over #2 Middlebury en route to the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament title, and four early Capital Athletic Conference victories.
The Spartans notched 17 wins last year but fell just short in the CAC semifinals. This year, head coach Matt Hunter has led the squad to the greatest start in the 49-year history of men’s basketball at York.
The Spartans are led by the senior trio of Blayde Reich, Dalton Myers, and Matt Scamuffo. Myers and Scamuffo are already members of the 1,000 career point club while Reich is knocking on the door. Reich has been named the tournament MVP in both of York’s in-season championships (Scranton and Washington & Lee) while Myers has joined him on the all-tournament team twice. Reich nearly set a pair of school records in York’s 118-110 overtime win over Washington & Lee with 44 points and 19 rebounds.
The Spartans jump back into conference play for their final 14 regular season games of the year starting on January 3 at Salisbury. With the week-5 rankings released, the Spartans improved their ranking from 25 to 13 by D3Hoops.com, the highest YCP has ranked since week 13 of the 2005-06 season.
