- When I first got the email, I wasn't really too sure what to expect. I did have some friends who did it the first time around, and they said they really enjoyed it and they felt that it was, it had a positive impact on them and as a leader on campus. And I thought this would be like a really good opportunity for me to grow as a person, and also as a leader, and learn new ways to be a more effective leader in my role. - Well first and foremost I wanted to give back to York College. I'm a graduate from, I won't state the date, but proud graduate and I wanted to be able to give back. I thought that leadership would be a great way to do it. Getting involved in the seminar, simply because throughout my career I've had a lot of leadership positions and I thought I could help students with a little dose of reality as to what, what it means out in the working world. So, that was basically it. - My community mentor was Samantha Shepherd. She was absolutely amazing. Through talking to her I learned so much about myself, so much about my future and different avenues and directions that I could go and also kinda how to prepare myself for that. I always kind of, tended to think, for my entire life after high school comes college, but I never really thought anything much past that. She really got me to break through that wall and start thinking that, you know, in a couple of semesters I'm going to be graduating and be going out into the real world and as scary as that was, throughout talking to her and getting her insight and her input, I realized that all the goals that I have and the dreams that I want to fulfill are attainable and I kinda learned the steps that I'm going to need to take in order to make that happen for myself. - My favorite part of the Developing Leaders Seminar was definitely all the teamwork and all the skills that we learn, because I thought it was really beneficial every week having a different topic to discuss and a different skill learned and working with the members of the course it was great to hear different opinions about what people had to say. Overall, it was just a great experience to learn some new things that I didn't already know. - You know I learned a couple of things. One was, our students here are really sharp. They are very committed to their careers. They know what they want to do. So, I was a little fearful that we'd spend time talking about careers and what do you want to do. Didn't have any of that at all. What that did for me, was it opened up the dialogue to talk about all the different content that was discussed during the leadership seminars. We really had a good exchange and I learned from my student, as long as I've been around it, you still don't know it all. And she was very involved in things outside of the classroom and had some experiences in leadership and some challenges and we were to talk through that, but I learned a lot of things through her. One in particular was diversity, you tend to think ethnicity and things like that, but she brought out the whole point it's diversity in thinking. How people think and process and it's true. But to have her tell me that and to realize that she's well ahead of where she needs to be in terms of getting out in the work force and getting after it. So that was a lot of fun. A lot of fun and I look forward to doing more. - So before the seminar I kinda always thought of leadership as being one dimensional. I thought there was kinda only one way to be a leader. You have to take charge and you have to kinda organize everyone and make everything happen. In the past, in all the different organizations I'm involved in, it's kinda been how I've approached leadership. But after taking this seminar I realize that's not the case at all and there are so many different ways that you can be a leader and contribute to the program's success and contribute to your own success and just all around be a well rounded person, work better with others, work better in groups and I think that I will take away what I learned in this program for everything that I do in my entire life. Whether it's the on-campus organizations that I'm a part of, the future internships and jobs that I will have, and even just working with friends and meeting new people. Just maintaining relationships in my life. I think what this program has taught us is just so well rounded and so helpful and influential and it will help us in our success in the rest of our lives.
