A client of the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship at York College recently hired alumnus Alexander Smith as its Chief Technology Officer and Software Developer. The Fire Solutions Group(FSG) hired Smith to oversee the development of a new augmented reality tool for the fire industry, as well as work on the technical aspects of training, marketing, and technical support.
Smith comes to FSG with years of experience, including HoloLens AR development and startup work. Most recently, he worked as a software engineer for Becton Dickinson. There, he contributed to a large high throughput molecular device in a regulated agile environment, developed in a full stack system from image processing, to creating typescript-based webpages, and managed the upkeep of multiple medical instruments in various environments in preparation for clinical trials. This background has helped Smith to make an easy transition into his current position with FSG.
Smith is a 2018 graduate of York College with a bachelor's degree in computer engineering. He has gained a background in designing software architecture, UML diagramming, scripting in a 3D Unity environment for AR applications, object-oriented programming in C++, C# and Python using JetBrains IDEs and Visual Studio, and process scheduling schemes, synchronization, and communication.
The Fire Solutions Group was established in 2013 as a fire testing and product development company. Its mission is to use engineering and innovation to produce superior application-driven products for the fire industry, while supplying complementing, informative, and solution driven services to the customer. For the past six years, FSG has been supplying fire testing consulting services, emergency response, and product development work for its clients.
The J.D. Brown Center serves to link the region’s entrepreneurial community with the knowledge and resources of York College through their business incubator, student engagement, and campus and community programs.
