After graduating from York College with a B.S., Shannon (Reedy) Idzik went on to earn her M.S. and DNP at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. She is now on the faculty at the University as an Associate Professor, and is also the Associate Dean of their DNP program. Within her professional community, she is active as the current Treasurer of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Facilities and also as a site evaluator for the Collegiate Commission of Nursing Education.
At the University of Maryland, she works with a cohort of fellow YCP graduates as well as people who used to teach at YCP. "It's a great bunch," she said. Idzik strongly remembers two of her professors from her time at York. Linda Avillo was her first nursing instructor. "People thought she was strict, but I liked that," said Idzik, who also credits Avillo for influencing her own teaching as a faculty member. Kim Green helped her to realize her passion for critical care, and Idzik discovered that she loved the critical care environment.
While at York, she also fondly remembers an elective that allowed her to experience what being an operating room nurse is like and said, "It was certainly an experience that you can’t get at every school." She was in the Delta Phi Epsilon sorority, leading to a lifetime of friendships. The other women she lived with called themselves the Duke St. Girls, and she is still in contact with most of them through Facebook. She said, "They were a great group of women, and still are." She remembers that the Nursing program was "a crazy credit load, but worth it. It truly prepared me for success."
