After less than two years as an officer with the Missouri City Police Department in Texas, Jessica Berry '09 (Schuylkill Haven, Pa.) was named Officer of the Year for 2012 and also received a commendation from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for making 75 DWI arrests throughout the year.
During her time with the Missouri City Police Department, Jessica pursued many training opportunities related to DWI investigation and set herself apart from her peers as a highly skilled DWI investigator.
"Receiving Officer of the Year and the commendation from MADD were both huge honors for me and very humbling," said Jessica. "I work for a wonderful department that is very supportive of its officers and will do everything it can to help us achieve our goals."
Eric Ling, Ph.D., Jessica's professor and advisor in the criminal justice program at York College, helped with every step along the way to achieving her goals while in school.
"We didn't always see eye to eye on things," Jessica recalled, "but that kept things interesting and led to good debates."
During her time at York, Jessica also completed internships with the Southwestern Regional Police Department and the Springettsbury Police Department, and she recommends that current students do the same.
"Find out what you want to do with your life, and do an internship in the field you want to work in. Once you know what you want, plan a strategy and do what is necessary to achieve your goals," she added.
