Cassandra Hinkle '17
Like many Nursing majors, Cassie Hinkle ’17 wants to pursue a career in medicine in order to make a difference in people’s lives. However, Cassie’s impact will be anything but ordinary, as she has chosen to combine a minor in Criminal Justice with her major in Nursing in order to become a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE).
Cassie has always had an interest in the criminal justice field and, at one point, contemplated becoming a lawyer or detective. However, after shadowing nurses at a local physician’s office, she developed a strong desire to become a nurse.
While researching nursing specialties, Hinkle made an exciting discovery. “SAFE nursing popped up, and I knew that would fit perfectly into what I want to do because it combines both Criminal Justice and Nursing,” said Cassie.
She is grateful that the College is providing her with ample opportunities to prepare for her career. While it has been difficult to fit Criminal Justice courses into her already busy schedule as a Nursing major, she is certain that the extra work will pay off.
Cassie knows that a strong academic foundation is key to a successful future. In addition to being named to the Dean’s List every academic semester at YCP, she was chosen to represent the College at the 2016 York College Grand Rounds Conference in 2016.
Additionally, this past summer, Cassie participated in an externship at York Hospital where she worked 12-hour shifts, assisting hospital staff with patient care.
When asked about her future, Hinkle explained that she would like to pursue her Master’s degree to become a Nurse Practitioner and eventually obtain her doctorate.
