Kirsten Leenaars: (Re)Housing the American Dream

Sept. 6 - Oct. 12, 2018 Reception/Artist Q&A: Sept. 6, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., York College Galleries (Wolf Hall)

Kirsten Leenaars, born in the Netherlands, is Associate Professor of Contemporary Practices at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work is “about connection; fostering a space for listening, being present, for acknowledgment, play and trust.” For this exhibition Leenaars worked with middle-school students, recording their personal histories and experiences to explore the real and imagined reality of the American Dream. The exhibition raises questions about the notions of home, belonging, and happiness in context of the American Dream, pondering the enduring question of what it means to be human and who we are to each other.
