Melanie Cohen '02
Committing to York College due to the positive impact of a standout professor Lowell Briggs, Melanie found herself at home at York. Prior to college, the world of broadcasting sparked Melanie’s interest, but after a few classes, she realized she was not fit for the technical aspect of broadcasting, but rather the communications side.
After college, Melanie started out as the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations at York College, later moving into major gift fundraising. She continued building her career in the development world for the next 10 years, and during this time she also pursued a graduate certificate in Communications from Towson University. Melanie believes that without her degree from York College, she would not have learned how to be professional throughout her career. She said it taught her everything from time management to leadership skills to gaining hands-on professional experiences such as her internships that later helped her land a job.
If Melanie’s success in her professional career is not enough, she is also involved with the Alumni Board and is a donor to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. This service has distinguished her as an accomplished individual who was recently recognized by York College as the Distinguished Service Award recipient for 2017. In the future, she has hopes to further her career through fundraising consultation.
Enjoyed most during her time at YCP: The lasting friendships she made.
