Wrightsville Elementary School
My name is Andrew Rhodes, and I am a senior Finance and Economics major at YCP. This is my second year on Road Crew and I think that the trip has already started off on a great note! On the first day of our trip, we had the pleasure of visiting a 2016 alumnus, Brian Baker, at Wrightsville Elementary. Brian is a Special Education Teacher at the school and a proud YCP Road Crew alumnus. At the elementary school, we had the opportunity to present to students on the basics of college. We spoke to them about what it is like to be a college student and introduced them to student life on YCP’s campus.
Perhaps the most interesting part of the day was when we played Rock-Paper-Scissors with the students. The activity ended with one of the students being named the Rock-Paper-Scissors champion after beating out some of the other students and being cheered on by his peers. The student was so happy that he won that he stood up in front of everyone with the microphone and talked about how much it meant to him to receive the recognition and support from his peers. Seeing the happiness on this student’s face was truly one of the strongest moments of the day.
Speaking with Brian, other Wrightsville Elementary staff and the elementary students taught us one important thing: “Dream big, work hard, stay humble”. This is the school’s quote this year and the students exemplify these words in their attitudes and behavior. This philosophy is one that I will hold with me for the rest of my life and I believe it will prove to be very helpful in my professional career.
