Thursday, January 10th was a big day for the YCP Road Crew. We started the day with a visit to the Today Show and were featured on TV with a shoutout to YCP. It was a very exciting opportunity! Though, my personal favorite was our visit to Viacom with alumna Sam Reyes ‘15. Viacom is a mass media company that works primarily with television and movies. Viacom owns multiple companies that people know very well including MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and many more.
Sam took us on a fascinating tour of the headquarters building in the middle of Times Square in New York City. We had the opportunity to see multiple different floors and learn more about both the company and her individual role. On one of the floors, there are rooms specifically for the newest smart technology. We got to see a little robot named Jibo and fellow Road Crew member Zach had his first experience with a virtual reality headset. The last floor we went to is where Nickelodeon is located. On that floor they have the original chair from Blues Clues which, of course, we all took our turn sitting in it and snapping photos. Here we also had the opportunity to talk as a group and ask Sam questions.
There was one thing Sam said that really stood out to me, “always move forward.” Even if you end up broke and have two unpaid internships, it could also be that step you needed to get the actual job. Also, if you keep going forward, you can advance in your career, because it’s very easy to get comfortable.
