Katie Spadaro '14
Field Marketing Manager, PeopleDoc
Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Administration

How has York College helped you get to where you are today?
Throughout my experiences with on-campus activities, I was able to start learning and build on some of the skills that are extremely important to my current job role. By setting a foundation in skills such as interpersonal communication, leadership, negotiation, and many others, I was able to jump right into certain things and continue to grow.

What advice do you have for current students or fellow alumni seeking a career in your chosen field?
I love the fact that my job is always something new every day. Not only am I literally doing different things every day, whether it be onsite at an event somewhere in North America or working on campaigns with our sales and marketing teams—we're always doing and trying something different. By continuing the startup mentality, we are able to be agile in our tactics, thinking on our feet and trying new things.

How have you been engaged with YCP since graduation?
I would say to take a shot and not to be afraid of trying something different. If you had told me years ago that I would be working in marketing in the HR Technology industry, I would have laughed. By taking a chance and trying something new, I ended up working at a job I love within a company I love being a part of every day. Sometimes jumping in headfirst and believing in yourself could be the best decision you ever make.

What is your professional title and what are some of your big-picture job responsibilities?
As a Corporate Communications - Stores Manager, I focus on implementing communications to our 140,000 colleagues from our Macy's stores. What does it mean to you to have York College students coming to your place of work for a special site visit?
I'm excited to host York College students. Not long ago, I was one of those students. At that time of my life, I couldn't imagine where I would end up working once I graduated. I couldn't visualize myself in the "real world". So I'm excited to be able to share my experience and answer any questions they may have.

What advice do you have for current students or fellow alumni seeking a career in your chosen field?
There are so many opportunities out there. It's okay to not know what you want to do for the rest of your life. Most of us will experience multiple jobs in our lifetime. Try new jobs, learn new roles, build your skills, and one day you'll find the job that's meant for you. Just know that opportunities will always present themselves, you will never be stuck.
