SpartaNation 2020 | Day One Site Visits

Meet Our Site Visit Hosts

Last year, the YCP Road Crew began a blog for YCP alumni, students, friends, and family to follow along on their SpartaNation journey. This year, we are continuing that new tradition! Throughout January, YCP Road Crew members will write a blog post to reflect on their experience at different site visits at alumni places of work. Each site visit host has also agreed to do a brief Q&A so we can get to know them better. Continue to check back on our website for new posts and follow us on social media @YCPAlumni for real-time updates. Below, meet the first alumni to host us for site visits on day one of the 2020 SpartaNation Tour.

Brian Baker '16
Special Education Teacher, Wrightsville Elementary School
Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood and Special Education

Q: What does it mean to you to have York College students coming to your place of work for a special site visit?
A: I have wanted SpartaNation to come to my place of employment ever since I was on the YCP Road Crew myself in 2016. I think it is a great opportunity for York College students to experience alumni working and seeing what a York College degree can do for them. I also think it is important for elementary students in my building to see what they could do when they are older and go to college.

Q: What were you involved in as a student?
A:

  • YCP Road Crew
  • Campus Activities Board, Traditions Chair
  • Student Ambassador
  • Peer Advisor
  • Orientation Leader
  • Commencement Speaker

Q: What do you enjoy most about your current professional role?
A: What I love most about my role as a Special Education Teacher is, of course, the students. For my students school is a happy place that they love to come to. I am grateful to get to provide a safe learning environment for my students to be successful. Seeing the smiles on their faces, the things they make me, and how thankful they are that I am their teacher keeps me coming back every day.

Makaya Revell '15

Q: What does it mean to you to have York College students coming to your place of work for a special site visit?
A: It's a dream come true to me. And I'm humbled to be chosen to spend time with the next generation of York College students.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your current professional role?
A: Saving and giving hope to the orphans of Congo DRC and Central Africa.

Q: What advice do you have for current students or fellow alumni seeking a career in your chosen field?
A: Be humble and always allow suffering to speak.

Tim Dexter '19
Founder & Co-Owner, Dexterity Depot
Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship

Q: What does it mean to you to have York College students coming to your place of work for a special site visit?
A: It is very surreal to have YCP students visiting my gym. When I came to YCP, my goal was to learn the business skills needed to reach my dream of opening my own gym. Four years later I can proudly say I have reached this goal. It is crazy to have students visiting my gym as a recent alumnus. I can show these students that they too can reach their dreams and goals with enough hard work, perseverance, passion, and dedication.

Q: What were you involved in as a student?
A:

  • Graham Innovation Scholars
  • Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity
  • Resident Assistant
  • Parkour Club, President & Founder
  • Habitat for Humanity

Q: What do you enjoy most about your current professional role?
A: Everything! But if I had to choose, it would be teaching youth to overcome obstacles in their lives and to have confidence in themselves.
