One of the site visits we had the pleasure of going to was the Appell Center for Performing Arts. This Center is composed of two theaters: the Strand and the Capitol. These theaters have been around for many years the Strand theater was built in 1925, and the Capitol theater was built in 1906 – and have been renovated several times. The Strand theater can hold about 1200 people, and the Capitol theater can hold about 420 people. There is also an additional dance studio/ multipurpose room inside the Appell Center that can be rented out by community members.
This is not a typical theater, Broadway performances, movies, musicals, comedy shows, and other live performances have occurred there. James Manjo ‘17 is in charge of selecting performers and reviewing contracts for them to perform at the theater. Originally, he interned at the theater during his time at York College as a music industry major and was then offered a job as house manager before taking on his current position as a programming assistant. James says he “realized the major won’t give you the job, it’s the work you put in.” He also stated that “York (College) has given me the tools to do what I want and perform.”
Hearing how York College has been able to open so many doors gives me hope and makes me more confident that I can be successful doing what I love.
