Spring on the York College campus

Mass Communications
“From day one, YCP has provided an environment full of encouragement and support that has helped me to grow into the confident individual I have aspired to become.”

Mara Lewis was grateful to be accepted for an internship last April at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas, NV. As an intern, she worked with StudioXperience’s broadcast booth. The CEO, Steve Waskul, interviewed industry leaders from technology companies such as Intel. Lewis worked with production by preparing film for interviews and editing in 4K resolution.

The course requirements for her Mass Communications major at York College helped her succeed in her internship. The Broadcast Performance and Video Production class provided experience in recording live broadcasts by working behind the scenes and on-air. The internship also helped her refine the skills she learned in her courses. Lewis explained, “My internship at the NAB Show not only taught me new editing techniques, using Adobe Premiere software, but also enforced the importance of being able to take constructive criticism.”

She learned her strengths and weaknesses, and how to network and interact with individuals in leadership positions based on the feedback that Waskul provided. She also became friends with other interns and learned a lot from them. Lewis’s internship helped her understand the fast pace of the broadcast industry and the importance of critical thinking and time management.
