Fraternities and sororities have a long lasting history in American higher education; with over 230 years of history, Greek life is an essential part of the co-curricular experience. Greek letter organizations (GLOs) were established from students’ desire to create a sense of community and associate with other students who share common interests, goals, and values. Fraternities and sororities are values based organizations promoting the four pillars of Greek life; scholarship, service, leadership, and friendship. Current literature has described Greek life membership as a positive platform for developing college students as responsible and engaged citizens, community leaders, students of character, and promoting transferable skill development opportunities. Rooted in tradition, values and principles, membership in a Greek organization is an empowering and rewarding addition to the college experience.
