Presidential Search Update

This page provides periodic updates from Presidential Search Committee Chairman George H. Glatfelter regarding the search for York College's next president.

March 13, 2013

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and of the Presidential Search Committee, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Pamela Gunter-Smith has been selected to serve as York College's fourth president beginning July 1, 2013. Dr. Gunter-Smith has served as provost and academic vice president at Drew University in Madison, N.J., since 2006.

We believe that Dr. Gunter-Smith has the background and capability, leadership and passion to build upon the numerous accomplishments of Dr. George Waldner and continue to improve our reputation and recognition. Her deep commitment to students, direct experience in the classroom, and understanding that high-quality education must remain affordable were strengths identified by the Search Committee and Board of Trustees. In addition, her strong collaborative skills will be helpful not only within the College and its constituencies but also within the community in which the College resides.

Learn more about Dr. Gunter-Smith.

I would like to thank the members of the Presidential Search Committee as well as the York College community for playing a role in this very important process. We look forward to formally welcoming Dr. Gunter-Smith to our campus within the next few weeks, as well as to celebrating the tenure of Dr. Waldner throughout his final months at York College.

Sincerely,

George H. Glatfelter

Chair, Presidential Search Committee

Jan. 14, 2013

The York College Presidential Search Committee is pleased to provide this update of our progress. Summarized below are the most important aspects of our efforts to date:

1) The presidential search process is tracking to plan.
We thank President George Waldner for planning his retirement in a manner that provides ample time to conduct a thorough and comprehensive search. His willingness to continue as president, if needed, until a successor is appointed, ensures that our search will not be encumbered by near- term deadlines. Our goal remains to recommend a nominee to the Board of Trustees later this spring prior to the planned retirement of Dr. Waldner. We are confident we can attain this objective.

2) The presidency of York College is one of the great opportunities in higher education today.
York College is a unique institution, characterized by excellent human and financial resources, a very distinctive mission, dedicated students, and impressive facilities. The Presidential Search Committee is approaching its responsibility thoughtfully and is being very deliberate as it considers the qualifications of nearly two hundred prospective candidates. A number of excellent prospects have been interviewed and two have visited campus and met with many of you in the last several weeks. In the weeks to come, others will follow.

3) York College is committed to moving from “Good to Great.”
We believe that President Waldner has positioned the College to progress from “Good to Great.” In this regard, our aspirations should be no less than to achieve national and international recognition as a great institution founded upon distinctive core values that define the York College Model. The next leader is the catalyst of this journey.

4) Our search process is advancing.
As the search matures, we remain steadfast in maintaining the integrity of the search criteria standards defined in our original Opportunity Profile. Our standards are high, as they should be. The Search Committee is committed to take the time necessary to ensure we identify the leader most capable of realizing the extraordinary potential of York College.

Sincerely,

George H. Glatfelter

Sept. 21, 2012

The York College Presidential Search Committee met on Sept. 21, 2012 with our consultant, Jon McRae, President of Collegiate Counsel, Inc. to review the credentials and experience of the candidates identified to date.

The committee has reviewed over 150 expressions of interest, as the pool of potential candidates has increased significantly since the search began in the spring. While the volume of candidates is notable, what is most remarkable is the number of well-qualified academic leaders who see York as an attractive opportunity and also have skills which appear to match our current and future needs. In short, we believe that York’s story has resonated with many good people.

While our consultants continue to talk with potential candidates, the committee is narrowing the list and meeting privately with some of the leading candidates. Plans are to invite finalists for campus visits to meet with many of you in the winter or early spring.

Please remember that if you have nominations or suggestions, you may contact our consultants, Collegiate Counsel, Inc. at ycpr@collegiatecounsel.com; or telephone, 404.812.1959. Of course, you may also contact any member of the Presidential Search Committee.

We are enthusiastic about our progress and remain thankful to President Waldner for his important role in making York College so attractive in the national market place.

Sincerely,

George H. Glatfelter

June 4, 2012

Your Presidential Search Committee is continuing its work. We met on May 17 with our consultant, Jon McRae, of Collegiate Counsel, Inc. to review the credentials and experience of the candidates identified to date.

To date the committee has reviewed over seventy formal expressions of interest. The pool of candidates is rich and demographically diverse, with expressions of interest from leaders in higher education, the corporate community, and the public sector, from across the U.S. and even internationally. Based upon the correspondence we’ve received and reports from our consultant, it is clear that the accomplishments of York College in recent years are well-known. Candidates see York as a strong institution with a compelling mission and an excellent foundation for future enhancements to its stature as a leading regional institution.

We’re encouraged by the quality and quantity of our candidates to date, and we anticipate considering numerous additional candidates as we continue our search through the summer months. In the fall, we will conduct confidential, offsite interviews with selected candidates and plan to invite two or more finalists for campus visits to meet with many of you in the winter.

If you have nominations or suggestions, you may contact our consultants, Collegiate Counsel, Inc. at ycpr@collegiatecounsel.com; or telephone, 404.812.1959. Of course, you may also contact any member of the Presidential Search Committee.

We are optimistic about the progress of our search and remain grateful to President Waldner for his leadership in making York College so attractive in the national market place.

Sincerely,

The Presidential Search Committee met recently and completed the important work of preparing the York College Opportunity Profile. The opportunity profile is the document which describes the distinctive features of York College to prospective presidential candidates. Again, as a reminder, we welcome your thoughts! You are encouraged to use the email presidentialsearch@ycp.edu for any questions or suggestions you may wish to offer to the Search Committee. Although the process of selecting York College's next president is only beginning, the Search Committee has already developed a commonality of perspective, and there is much excitement for the work ahead.

Sincerely,

Feb. 1, 2012

The Presidential Search Committee held its first official meeting on Jan. 26, 2012 and is seeking input from all constituencies of the College as it prepares the Opportunity Profile. This document will define our vision and expectations for the future and will be approved by the Search Committee in late February.

One of our committee members described this search as “an event which drives cohesion,” and that phrase nicely reflects the feelings we all have about inclusiveness and transparency. The purpose of this search update page is to keep interested stakeholders of the College up to date with respect to our progress, and regular updates will be posted.

Special thanks to the many students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members who have already offered great feedback to our consultant, Jon McRae of Collegiate Counsel, Inc., during his sessions on campus last week. We welcome your thoughts. You are encouraged to use the email presidentialsearch@ycp.edu for any questions or suggestions you may wish to offer to the Search Committee. This is an exciting time in the life of York College as we celebrate the legacy of President George Waldner and chart the course for the future.

Sincerely,

George H. Glatfelter
