Salon des Refusés
Exhibition Dates: February 7-21, 2014,
York College Galleries at Marketview Arts
Opening Reception: February 7, 5–7 p.m.
(First Friday Art Walk)
This second annual display of student artwork acknowledges that exhibition jurors don’t always get it right. The Salon des Refusés, or “Exhibition of Rejects,” has a rich history. The famous Paris Salon des Refusés of 1863 included Manet’s Luncheon on the Grass and Whistler’s Symphony in White, No. 1: The White Girl. Though not as famous as those examples, many student works of art that are highly regarded by our faculty are rejected each year for inclusion in our Annual Juried Student Exhibition. This exhibition seeks to right that perceived wrong and give all rejected works an opportunity to be seen. We invite the campus community and interested public to visit both exhibitions, make comparisons, and determine how well our jurors handled the task of choosing the best work. The accepted works will be shown in the Annual Juried Student Exhibition in the York College Galleries from January 23 – February 6, while the Salon des Refusés officially opens in the York College Studios at Marketview Arts on February 7 as part of Downtown York’s First Friday Art Walk. While our jurors have the honor and responsibility of selecting award winners for the Juried Student Exhibition, all First Friday visitors will be given the opportunity to vote for the award winners in the Salon des Refusés. Celebrate democracy and get out the vote!
