"The impetus behind the work is to inspire viewers to look at their surroundings with renewed awe and wonder. These paintings reflect my affection for raw, urban environments. The artistic concern of the paintings is not to portray quaint make-believe, or fantasy worlds, but worn, socially forgotten areas with interesting and forgotten history. The paintings are not social commentary, but rather invitation to reconsider the familiar and find in it something new and worthy of further investigation." – Kree Wiede '13
Wiede's paintings have been shown extensively throughout York at Studio Gallery 234, YorkArts, City Art Ltd., The Parliament, and the York College Galleries at Marketview. Wiede was the recipient of two significant awards at York College this spring; his painting Beaver Street Bridge was awarded First Place by juror Robert Patierno in the Annual Juried Student Exhibition, and he won Best In Show in the Fine Art Senior Exhibition.
Shortly after graduating the York College Art program this spring, Wiede was awarded the second annual Appell Arts Fellowship, a residency program open to recent York College graduates that provides housing, parking, studio space and a stipend. This exhibition is the culmination of a year's worth of artistic production made possible by this fellowship.
