Some people might call Lowell Briggs a thrill-seeker. After all, he's been on the scene of the three worst disasters in recent history: 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the Tsunami that devastated Thailand.

Lowell's been working with FEMA for 17 years because he’s an international expert in crisis communications and emergency management. Lowell lives by a credo his mother instilled in him - we are our brother's keeper. He believes that that most profound thing he can do is to help somebody else when they've lost it all.

As an educator, professor Briggs feels it’s his obligation to get out there and experience that which he is teaching. If he can't do it, or understand all the complexities and feel the heat of the moment, how can he articulate it to his students? If he can experience it, taste it, and then impart that knowledge to his York College students with the same intensity and zeal for good, he thinks that's what being a good college professor is all about.
