What Did You Learn Today?
Posted November 26, 2007FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
If you could be invisible, like Harry Potter, what would you do? Take money from banks? Go to the movies without paying? Or something worse? Do you do the right thing only if somebody is watching you? Do you always tell the truth?
Rory Kraft ponders these questions with his students. Dr. Kraft teaches ethics, which he describes as how you ought to live your life.
The biggest challenge to get his students to understand ethics is the problem of relativism. If something is okay for you, does that mean it's okay? If somebody else thinks it's okay, is it? What about slavery or genocide or cheating on your income tax return? What about cheating in sports? If you don't get caught, is it okay?
Dr. Kraft believes there is a right and wrong answer to almost every situation. He presents his York College students with real world scenarios and forces them to make tough decisions and then he pushes them to think through the consequences.
