What Did You Learn Today?

Imagine that you're 78 years old, you have fuzzy vision, diabetes and high blood pressure. The fine print on the prescription bottle is hard enough to read, but what's really complicated is trying to coordinate the four prescription medications you're supposed to be taking. When to take what, which one do you take with food, can you take two of them together?
If you're lucky, you have access to one of three community health centers that Cheryl Thompson and her nursing colleagues operate. They provide assessment and referral services while conducting a broad range of interventions, including screening programs for high blood pressure, diabetes, breast cancer and heart disease. They do nutrition consultations and they'll even show you what $20.00 can buy in the grocery store.
Dr. Thompson's York College nursing students benefit because the community health centers provide best practice clinical training. Having a positive impact on people who might not have anybody else to care for them has its own rewards.
