Bats, Skunks, Feral Cats, grounds hogs, raccoons and foxes aren’t the most warm and fuzzy critters to work with. Especially if one has Rabies.
Rabies attacks the central nervous system, and once a human being displays symptoms of the virus…it’s too late.
Captain Pamela Minnich is Commander of the Animal Services Division of the Fairfax County Police Department. Her unit handles nearly any situation that involves creatures, both pets and wild animals. From dog bites to animal cruelty investigations.
Minnich’s department works closely with the local Health Department to track and chart which wild animals are likely to be carrying the rabies virus at a certain time. This allows Minnich and her fellow officers to monitor certain groups of animals, to alert citizens of any threat, and to educate their citizens about precautions and prevention. Prior to her captaincy, she was assistant commander of the Major Crimes Division.
Minnich credits her York College education as one catalyst that enables her to successfully juggle a variety of cases.
