FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

YORK, Pa. – A stunning exhibit of 98 photographs from the permanent collection of the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will open Thursday, Oct. 5 at York College of Pennsylvania Galleries in Evelyn and Earle Wolf Hall. Opening reception is from 7 – 9 p.m. and the exhibit will run thru Nov. 15.

On opening night, Dr. Timothy Riggs of the Ackland Art Museum will be giving a free public lecture at 7 p.m. in the Evelyn and Earle Wolf Hall, Recital Hall, titled “The Shape of the Moment: Space, Time, and Meaning in Twentieth-Century Photography.” The slide lecture will cover the significance of photography in the twentieth century and also provide an overview of the exhibition.

Organized by themes that have defined the medium, such as landscape, architecture, social documentary, nature, portraits, and travel, are works by significant photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz, Ansel Adams, Margaret Bourke-White, Sebastiao Salgado, Gordon Parks, Nan Goldin, and many others whose names are synonymous with the photographic medium.

“In contrast to the fast-moving images of film, television, and video, photographs allow viewers to linger and reflect on people, places, and events that are suspended in time,” says curator Barbara Matilsky.

A section of the exhibit is also devoted to photographic processes, beginning with the daguerreotype and the most recent innovations in color photography.
