Almost fifteen years before the release of the recent, Oscar-winning Crash (2005), John Sayles's searing independent film, City of Hope (1991), dramatized the racial, economic, and political tensions simmering in contemporary urban America by chronicling the ways in which the lives of a large cast of socially-diverse characters intertwine in a fictional New Jersey city. Weaving together their stories in a way that challenges stereotypes and defeats the viewer's expectations, Sayles creates a rich and compelling narrative tapestry that remains provocative today for its insights into the fractiousness of modern-day social relations in the United States. Dr. Jack Ryan, a professor of English at Gettysburg College and the author of John Sayles, Filmmaker (McFarland, 1998), will introduce the film and lead a question-and-answer session after the screening.
