Most people will not see a connection between Chemistry and English Composition. Really, what relationship can possibly exist between a Bunsen burner and Webster’s Dictionary?

Cate Sacchi is a writing tutor and, during her training, she read a paper that discussed the similarities between being a chemistry tutor and a writing tutor. She thought it worth additionally study.

Cate believes there are analogies, metaphors and other ways that tutors use language to help students understand material. But in science there is a very different method of investigation than in writing.

Cate’s objective is to determine if there are skills or ways of speaking that a chemistry tutor uses that might help a writing tutor or vice versa.

Cate plans to go to graduate school to study literature or Rhetoric and composition, with an end goal to become a college professor teaching literature and writing. She’s interested in how people use language and used wisely her time as a tutor in the Learning Resource Center at York College.
