YORK COLLEGE OF PENNSYLVANIA AND CENTRAL PA MAGAZINE ANNOUNCE THE WINNERS OF THE 2006 WRITING CONTEST

HARRISBURG, PA – York College of Pennsylvania and Central PA magazine announce the winners of the 2006 Writing Contest: First Prize, “Monopoly” by Carl H. Shuman, Harrisburg; Second Prize, “The Trouble in Daniel” by Jeffrey Voccola, Kutztown; Third Prize, “As Told by Roxanne, Age 9” by Deborah Linder, Lancaster. York College of Pennsylvania is the sponsor of this year’s contest.
“Monopoly” by Carl H. Shuman appears in the April 2006 edition of Central PA magazine. First-, second- and third-place winning entries and honorable mentions are posted online at Central PA magazine’s website, www.centralpa.org. The three winning entries will be awarded cash prizes: $500 for first prize, $300 for second prize and $200 for third prize.
Central PA magazine received 189 qualifying entries consisting of original, unpublished work, 1,500 words or less in length. Each piece was reviewed by preliminary judges Kathy Silks, vice president of audience relations, WITF, Inc., and Noreen Livoti, associate editor, Central PA magazine. Judges Dr. Stuart Stelly and Dr. Dominic Delli Carpini of the Department of English and Humanities at York College of Pennsylvania chose the top three winners and seven honorable mentions.
Honorable mentions include: “Number 11” by Maria McKee, Hershey; “Relativity” by Harvey Freedenberg, Harrisburg; “A Good Life” by Jack Miller, Harrisburg; “Of Boones and Bruins” by Kristine Brennan, Newtown Square; “Second Chances” by Jeanne Buckingham, York; “Sandy in a Station Wagon” by Ann Elia Stewart, New Cumberland; and “Accommodations” by Larry Penner, Lancaster.
Winners and honorable mentions will be honored at a reception held at The 1770’s Room, Iosue Student Union Building at York College of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, April 5, 2006.
