Sarah Wildey admits she was a horrible bassoon player. She was one of a million clarinet players in high school until somebody donated a bassoon to Sarah’s school. Sarah thought the instrument looked cool, and she’s a huge fan of Fantasia, in which Mickey Mouse plays the bassoon as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
The bassoon is an instrument in the woodwind family. It’s a large instrument that’s not easy to play. The player’s right hand alone is responsible for 17 different keys, NINE of which are controlled by the thumb. A major symphony orchestra contains just two bassoons.
While doing research on a piece by composer Alan Hovaness (Ho Van Ess), Sarah contacted the man in charge of the Hovaness website. Turns out this man is opening a Hovaness museum in
Sarah collaborated with her York College professor, and recorded three selections to donate to the museum. All of which will also be catalogued in the Library of Congress.
