York College and "Central PA" Magazine announce 2005 Writing Contest winners

York College of Pennsylvania and Central PA magazine announce the winners of the 2005 Writing Contest: First Prize, "Memorial Day" by Mary Arguelles, Reading; Second Prize, "Long Shadows of Morning" by Christine Brandt Little, Gettysburg; and Third Prize, "Late, On Summer Evenings" by Jeanette Topar, Middleburg. York College of Pennsylvania is the sponsor of this year's contest.

"Memorial Day" by Mary Arguelles appears in the April 2005 edition of Central PA magazine. First-, second-, and third-place winning entries are posted online at Central PA magazine's Web site, www.centralpa.org. The three winning entries will be awarded cash prizes: $500 for first prize, $300 for second prize and $200 for third prize.

Central PA magazine received 185 qualifying entries consisting of original, unpublished work, 1,500 words or less in length. Each piece was reviewed by preliminary judges, Charles Lichty, vice president of marketing, WITF, Inc., and Noreen Livoti, associate editor, Central PA magazine. Judges Dr. Stuart Stelly and Mr. David Walters of the Department of English and Humanities at York College of Pennsylvania chose the top three winners and seven honorable mentions.

Honorable mentions include: "The Goose" by Roseanne Perkins, Kutztown; "Girl on the Stoop" by Peggy Mumper, New Cumberland; "Escape by Train" by Jack L. Woods, Elizabethtown; "His Coffee" by Thomas Byrn, Bloomsburg; "Certified" by Lucy Miller, Harrisburg; "June Second, 1910 Into Eternity: The Final Moments of Faulkner's Quentin Compson" by Michael Flickinger, Ephrata; and "For a Moment" by Nancy Robertson, Hershey.

Winners and honorable mentions were honored at a reception held at the 1770s Room, Iosue Student Union Building at York College of Pennsylvania on Thursday, April 7, 2005.
