Any marine biologist can conduct research on whales, dolphins or seals. That’s easy. But consider a microscopic, single-cell organism like phytoplankton…there aren’t many scientists studying THAT.

Jessica Nolan THOUGHT she wanted to study fish. But while on a research cruise to Alaska, she discovered that phytoplankton plays a critical role in ocean life. It is the foundation of the marine food chain. Neither whales nor dolphins play as vital an ecological role as Phytoplankton.
