First juried show for York College Annual Student Exhibition

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Annual Student Exhibition has been a fixture of the Division of Art at York College of Pennsylvania for many years and has been held in the York College Galleries since the building was constructed in 1994. However, this month's opening of the exhibition will mark a first for the annual event - a juror has reviewed submitted works and only those meeting a specific criteria and level of quality have been accepted for display at the opening reception which will be held on March 16 from 5-7 p.m. in the York College Galleries.

"Over the past few years we've worked in many ways at creating a more competitive art program and this is just one way to accomplish that," explained Dr. Pamela Hemzik, associate professor of art and art gallery director. Hemzik added that such juried shows will elevate the level of the art program since students' work must be at a higher standard in order to be accepted and in order to add the distinction to their resume. It also corresponds to the increasing vigors present in the art classrooms.

Juror and Pennsylvania artist Robert Patierno has exhibited his paintings, prints and drawings in galleries and museums throughout Europe and across the United States. His prints, paintings and drawings are included in the permanent collection of The Royal Museum of Art, Antwerp, Belgium, and the Frans Masereel Centrum Pour Grafiks, Kasterlee, also in Belgium. The Erie Art Museum, the Lancaster Museum, and the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art in Pennsylvania have collected his work and he has participated in one man shows at Pennsylvania State University, Middletown, Pa.; Lancaster Museum of Art, Lancaster, Pa.; Millersville University, Millersville, Pa.; Raleigh Contemporary Gallery, Raleigh, N.C.; and HoFP Gallery, Columbia, S.C.

The Annual Student Exhibition is free and open to the public. The York College Galleries are located on the first floor of the Music, Art and Communication Building and operate under the following hours: Saturday and Sunday, Noon - 5:00 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; and Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Free visitor parking is adjacent to the Music, Art and Communication Center and the art galleries are wheelchair accessible.
