FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In recognition of science, chemistry, networking, and community partnership, the York College Chemistry Industry Advisory Council will host its formal meeting on Feb. 17 at the Country Club of York with guest speaker Michael Shifflet, principal chemist at Pfizer, and will feature a student-industry poster session.

Shifflet, who has co-authored several papers dealing with cleaning validation analytical methods in such magazines as "LC/GC" and "Pharmaceutical Review," will speak at 7:30 p.m. on the composition of eucalyptol for an audience of industry representatives, chemistry and physical science professors, chemistry students and interns, and college officials.

Beginning at 5 p.m., the poster session will provide students with the opportunity to highlight the work they have accomplished as interns with local industries. Junior chemistry major Lisa Simmonds, who will present a poster entitled "The Use of Biomonitoring in Determining Levels of Toxicity in Water Samples," felt her internship at EA Engineering, Science, and Technology provided her with the opportunity to experience different types of work in her field of study. "I experienced both the office setting working on reports and the lab setting where the data was studied and analyzed. In the toxicology lab, I was also introduced to biological studies while working with the test organisms," says Simmonds. "At EA, I learned a lot about what is out there for chemists and the types of lab work you can do in an industry."

Senior Bryan Eigenbrodt will present a poster entitled "Chemistry Internship at Adhesives Research Inc." and found the problem-solving process as an important part of his learning experience. "They allowed me the time to work through and think through my problems instead of constantly answering my questions. This was important because that's what a research and developer does," explains Eigenbrodt. "This internship gave me the courage to rely on my own knowledge, as well as my own capability to adapt to and take in new information."

The York College Chemistry Industry Advisory Council partners York College chemistry students with local industry in a mutually beneficial relationship. Talented and hardworking students enrolled in any of the hundred chemistry majors offered at York College offer their skills and determination to local industry in exchange for beneficial work experience.
