Fine art beyond the classroom: 2005 York College Art Faculty Biennial

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

As professors, they teach technique and provide critique while inspiring the next generation of artists. Their work as educators is important, yet it does not serve as the limit of their experience in the artistic world. These York College professors are a dynamic group of professional artists from diverse backgrounds, spanning the fine arts and regularly exhibiting their works locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Students and the public will have the opportunity to view the painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media, and photography of faculty members. The opening reception for the 2005 York College Art Faculty Biennial will be held on Jan. 27 at the York College Galleries from 5-7 p.m. The exhibit will run through Feb. 25.

In some instances, the professors will exhibit work that departs from what they teach at York College. This divergence demonstrates the depth and diversity of the faculty, such as sculpture teacher and Baltimore native Laure Drogoul's "Sweet Writing Device," which was featured as part of the mass transit bus project in Baltimore, Md. Drogoul's work has also been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Most recently she has been on a U.S.-Japan Creative Artist Fellowship in Tokyo, Japan, where she is creating an artwork on smell perception and geography.

For others, art has been progressive. "Having spent 20 plus years assisting others in expressing their deepest feelings through art, I decided in 2002 to begin an 'artist way' journey with some artist friends," explains Marian Lorence who teaches art in recreation therapy. "This resulted in collage making among other artistic pursuits." Lorence's collage evokes feeling by incorporating experimental painting for color and texture.

With the most vibrant and diverse exhibition of faculty work, the 2005 York College Art Faculty Biennial will provide another perspective of accomplished artists, and is free and open to the public. The York College Galleries are located on the first floor of the Music, Art and Communication Building and operate under the following hours: Saturday and Sunday, Noon - 5:00 p.m.; Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; and Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. Free visitor parking is adjacent to the Music, Art and Communication Center and the art galleries are wheelchair accessible.
