York College of Pennsylvania Goes West

Posted September 22, 2004
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Following the advice of Horace Greeley, York College is "going west," as the borders of the campus burst with the expansion for new facilities. On Sept. 21, college officials and students celebrated the beginning of construction of the Spartan Center - the college's fitness, sport and physical education center. Located on the college's West Campus along Grantley Road in Spring Garden Township, the new center will serve as the heart of campus for varsity and intramural sports, fitness training and student recreation, and reflects the college's holistic approach to education.

"For many years we have dreamed of having the land we need to address our needs and goals for additional academic and extra-curricular facilities," states Dr. George Waldner, President of York College. "The new 47-acre West Campus opens up myriad possibilities for transformation and progress."

Transformation at York College recently began with the Schmidt Library. The complete and dramatic renovation of the facility's interior reflects the growing need for resourceful and technologically savvy graduates in the work force. A grand reopening celebration on Sept. 23 will highlight the new electronic resources available to students, including wireless capabilities and expanded databases, as well as improved stack areas, group work space, individual study carrels, an outdoor reading garden and the library's new look.

"A Time to Act"
The transformation at York College also reflects a trend in the existing student body; total full-time enrollment growth over the past 12 years represents an increase of 45 percent, with a majority of the growth in the past eight years. To serve its current enrollment of 4,300 full-time students, York College is striving to provide many new facilities to make available increased opportunities for its students to develop as well-rounded individuals in academic, social and fitness areas.

Fundraising and institutional savings provide the financial foundation for the transformation at York College. Many community and alumni donors have contributed to the ongoing capital campaign, "A Time to Act," which supports the renovation of campus buildings, such as Schmidt Library, and the construction of the new Spartan Center.

Cultural Center
Additional transformation projects focus on providing more instructional space and building a college theater to accommodate student plays, lectures by distinguished speakers and theater productions. These projects will restructure the current Wolf Gymnasium to create a humanities and social sciences center in the lower section of the gymnasium and a theater in the upper level.
