York College Fulbright Scholar prepares for an academic year in Macedonia

Dr. Gerald Siegel, professor of English at York College, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture at the Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, during the 2004-2005 academic year. Granted by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, Siegel joins approximately 800 faculty and professional scholars out of 8,000 applicants as they travel abroad to 140 countries. This is Siegel's third award and second trip to Macedonia as a Fulbright Scholar.
Siegel will teach courses on contemporary American fiction and poetry during his tenure at the largest university in the country of Macedonia. Upon his return in Oct. 2005, Siegel hopes to speak about the changes in the education system since its separation from Yugoslavia.
Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields. Among thousands of prominent Fulbright Scholar alumni are Milton Friedman, Nobel Prize-winning economist; Alan Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; Rita Dove, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet; and Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel Corporation.
