Kindergartners Go To College
Posted June 18, 2004FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
On Wednesday, June 9, 18 pint-sized students donned their caps, listened to a keynote speaker, and received diplomas at York College of PA. After the ceremony they also continued a tradition by painting their initials on the "senior rock."
The "graduation" of these McKinley Elementary School students from Ms. Sam Sheffer's class is the culmination of a meeting between Mr. Lopez, superintendent of York City School District, and Dr. George Waldner, president of York College.
Research shows that urban students benefit from early positive experiences with business, community, and education. Mr. Lopez takes this a step further and believes the desire to go to college begins in kindergarten. Hence, "Adopt-A-Kindergarten" was born.
The students are told that they are "mini" York College students. The students visit York College at least twice in the spring and they are visited in the classroom, at least once a month, by YCP administrators who read and volunteer their time in other capacities.
Good luck to the Class of 2004 as they prepare to take on the challenges of first grade as we anxiously await the arrival of the Class of 2005!
