Dr. Waldner Named Educator of the Year

York, Pennsylvania -- Dr. George W. Waldner, President of York College, has been named the 2004 Educator of the Year by the Manufacturers' Association of South Central Pennsylvania. The honor was bestowed upon Dr. Waldner by Michael Smeltzer, executive director of the association, at the group's annual meeting on Tuesday, April 6. The award is given to those in the education field who: are committed to increasing the awareness of technical career options, are active in developing stronger relationships between employers and education, maintain an awareness of business needs and future expectations, and promote a positive interaction with schools, businesses, and the community.
In his remarks announcing the award, Mr. Smeltzer said, "We honor Dr. Waldner for his local involvement. He is an active member of the YorkCounts Commission, and is a board member of numerous community organizations including the York County Alliance for Learning and the York County Economic Development Corporation. Dr. Waldner has provided the leadership at York College to achieve national recognition for excellence in its programs, while maintaining an awareness of business needs and the affordability for students. The development of McKay Hall is just one example of the leadership he has provided to York College. Located within McKay Hall are state-of-the art facilities focused on advanced nursing and mechanical engineering programs."
Dr. Waldner, who has been president of York College since 1991, is well-known on the national education scene. He's a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and a member of the Board of Advisors of the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education. He holds a Ph.D. in politics from Princeton University. Prior to coming to York he served as vice president for Academic Affairs at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and Provost at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia.
